Goliath - Official Video

Version Information

  • First movement recorded as "Rapid Fire Tollbooth" for the release of Omar's solo album Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo. This version features a slower, jazzier interpretation and different lyrics. Marcel features on drums, and Money Mark on keys.

Live Notes

  • Debuted as "Rapid Fire Tollbooth" in Chicago 2006 during the Amputechture tour. The song was played very similarly to the version from Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo.
  • The second part debuted at the beginning of the Amputechture tour, in a different key, addended to Roulette Dares. This segment's roots go back to 2004 performances of the song, which feature a similar segment in 7/4.
  • The ending solo was extended upon the induction of Deantoni Parks.
  • During late 2006 shows in Japan, the song was greatly extended and featured a minimalist, jazzy jam and improv section, with heavy call-and-response between Cedric and Omar.
  • The two segments were finally joined together upon the induction of Thomas Pridgen. The first segment was sped up to match the studio version of Goliath. The second movement was changed into the key of Rapid Fire Tollbooth, and was played to varying length with adlibbed vocals from Cedric.
  • The lyrics for the first movement remained the same as Rapid Fire Tollbooth, while the Goliath lyrics for the second part debuted during the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group show at the Fuji Rock festival in 2007.
  • The song changed to Goliath lyrics in December 2007 in Los Angeles. Blues scale arpeggios were added to the verses as per the studio version.
  • The minimalist, slower jam was brought back in January of 2008 and played to varying length throughout the rest of the Bedlam in Goliath tour, sometimes extending upwards of 20 minutes. These jams also experimented with speed, staccato and call-and-response, with adlibbed lyrics from Cedric.
  • The jam was also one of the very few times and songs, that saw Cedric use a theremin (other songs using the theremin include Tetragrammaton - for example @ the Toronto 2008 show).
  • The song was radically sped up during the Bedlam in Goliath tour.
  • The jam was completely cut, and the song returned to studio form, in 2009 at the beginning of the Octahedron tour. These performances were marginally slower than the studio version, and Cedric interchanges in parts of the lyrics to Rapid Fire Tollbooth.

Other Notes

  • A video for the song features the band playing toy instruments in the middle of a road at night, with Cedric dressed as The Elephant Man from David Lynch's film of the same name.

Lyrics for Goliath

that night i remember
what you slipped in my glass
we came rewinding when
i foamed at the mouth
while the lights winked at me
and now my shape is kept
the rain it can't hide
wash the pain from this hex
is it so permanent
did she catch a left eye
when it blinks three times
or once just to seal you in
in your drunken breath
did it stain like us
in place of poison heat
i gotta rid this world of your intention
swap the corpse
in the casket

give me that corpse please
the one that tore nightly
i really want it now
fold the arms slowly
don't want you to hold me
it fits just like a glove
does he make you feel alright

when i seep inside your truth
through suspicious little coughs
you sank your nails inside a key
while the door you shut closed up
the black stockings you kept
smell of wet cigarette
torn of lust that you could not keep
i have slept inside your fault
to have you keep me here on this leash
for the rest of your pets
i will feed to the theft
as we consummate the vows of defeat
and when you pray for an end to this
i do believe this is eternity

give me that corpse please
the one that tore nightly
i really want it now
fold the arms slowly
don't want you to hold me
it fits just like a glove
your closet is bulging
white marrow withholding
does it make you feel alright?

never heard a man speak like this man before
never heard a man speak like this man before
all the days of my life ever since i've been born
never heard a man speak like this man before
watch me now
say it loud
hold your heavy burden
in a pocket full of drink that i've drunk
spit the remnants in your direction
this is the closest to any kingdom
that you will come

i'm starting to feel a miscarriage coming on
it's numbing a stump
clearing in my throat
and i just can't lose grip of it
she fumigated my mental hygiene
i'm all out of pulse
but i know you can resuscitate me

never heard a man speak like this man before
never heard a man speak like this man before
all the days of my life ever since i've been born
never heard a man speak like this man before
watch me now
